Well today was great! The worship... for some reason, possibly because they played songs I didn't know as well and/or were harder to sing... may have been just as good but I didn't get into it as much.
The first class was once again one of my favorites, Barry Bennett! Lots of information in here, good stuff!
Intro to the Bible -Barry Bennett Lesson 4
-Inspiration
What does it mean to say that the Bible is ‘infallible’ and ‘inerrant?’
John 17:8 and 17 For I have given unto them the words which you gave me; and they have received them, and have known surely that I came forth from you; and they have believed that you sent me.
“Sanctify them by your truth. Your word is truth”
The Bible cannot be wrong in anything it affirms whether historical, scientific or spiritual. It records true events. The text is true in its historical, literary and revelatory context.
Inerrant-it cannot err
Infallible-it does not err
His word is truth.
Inspired=God breathed
All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.
Old testament (again) is not the same level of inspiration that the new testament is, because Jesus is the full revelation of the Gospel.
“Blessed are you eyes for they see, and your ears for they hear; for assuredly, I say to you that many prophets and righteous men desired to see what you see, and did not see it, and to hear what you hear, and did not hear it”
Jesus believed the old testament scriptures,
Matthew 5:17-18 “Do not think that I cam to destroy the Law or the prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. For assuredly, I say to you, till heaven and earth pass away, one jot or one tittle will by no means pass from the law till all is fulfilled.” (jot and tittle are Hebrew markings)
“Have you not read what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him” Matthew 12:3
Matthew 22:43-44 “He said to them, “how then does david in the Spirit call Him ‘Lord,’ saying ‘The lord said to my lord, sit at my right hand, till I make your enemies your footstool”’?
Matthew 24:15 “Therefore when you see the ‘abomination of desolation,’ spoken of by Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place” (Jesus affirms many old testament books including Daniel!)
Luke 4:3 And the Devil said to him, IF you are the son of God, command this stone to become bread.” instantly doubting what God had just said, “this is my son whom I love…” Jesus responds by quoting scripture, we can also have confidence if Jesus did!
Matthew 12:39 Jesus confirms the story of Jonah!
Galatians 3:16 Now to Abraham and his Seed were the promises made. He does not say, “and to seeds,” as of many, but as of one, “and to your seed,” who is Christ!”
Paul also had great confidence in scripture, so much that he based this one huge point on the simple difference between plural and non plural.
Romans 5:12-21 “Therefore, just as through one man sin entered the world, and death through sin, and thus death spread to all men, because all sinned-- (For until the law sin was in the world, but sin is not imputed when there is no law. Nevertheless death reigned from Adam to Moses, even over those who had not sinned according to the likeness of the transgression of Adam……” Once again, affirming Genesis 1-3
ALL Scripture is inspired by God!
How was the Word inspired?
2 Peter 1:20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation, for prophecy never came by the will of men, but holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Spirit.”
It was never their own ideas, but said in their own way of speaking.
Mark 12:36 For david himself said by the Holy Spirit….” Jesus affirms that though it was by the holy Spirit, David spoke and wrote. Duel authorship.
Acts 4:25 as you have said by the mouth of your servant David…..”
Hebrews 3:7 Therefore, as the Holy Spirit says: Today, if you will hear His voice,” That is from Samuel! But it was spoken through Samuel by the holy Spirit.
Kinds of Inspiration.
1 Corinthians 2:13-14 These things we also speak, not in words which man’s wisdom teaches but which the Holy Spirit teaches, comparing spiritual things with spiritual. But the natural man does not receive the things of the spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.” A natural man cannot understand these things, they simply have some big degree so that they can sow great doubt in others. They have an excuse for not having the power of the Gospel working in their lives, so they can live the way they want to live.
Matthew 22:31 “But concerning the resurrection of the dead, have you not READ what was spoken to you by God…”?
Secular thoughts of inspiration….
Natural Inspiration-human in nature-poem or song, spiritual geniuses who wrote of their own will.
Mechanical dictation-Men were passive scribes only writing what they heard
Unfortunately the book of Mormon has had over 4,000 grammatical errors corrected, so much for God’s grammar.
Conceptual Inspiration-Men were inspired to communicate divine truths using the natural strengths and limitations of the authors - words, expressions, grammar. It is the concepts that are inspired, not necessarily the literal events or examples.
Inspiration of degrees-some parts of the Bible are more inspired than others (but really, there are parts more revelatory but not more inspired-all have the same inspiration, but different levels of revelation)
Partial inspiration-Only some parts of the Bible are inspired(pathetic theory of man)
Verbal Plenary Inspiration-All the words are inspired by God.
Men spoke as they were moved by God 2 peter 1:20-21
The scripture cannot be broken John 10:35
Matthew 5:18, Not until heaven and earth pass away.
1 Peter 1:25, The word of the Lord endures forever.
The Word faithfully records all events, whether of God or not, ie. Lying, ignorance, sin, adultery, murder.
Well now that you know you can trust the Word of God with everything, go do it! (yeah I'm going for it, but really, God is already taking care of me, I'm not sick, my money is in good order, I have great roommates and friends, the car is doing well, everything is great!) And yes, I always get a lot out of Barry's teaching!
So the second class today was Lawson Perdue... I think that is how you spell his last name... I can't really remember haha, but this guy, looks, talks, acts, sings, gets excited, and just generally reminds me of Barny Fief from the Andy Griffith show! So now you can picture that and get excited as well, though today was so GOOD that I sat there and listened and didn't take many notes... haha sorry!
Lawson- Covenants/Romans Lesson 3
Romans 4:1-25 (Read it, I’m not typing it down)
Abraham believed God, and it was counted to hi for righteousness.
Counted: Logizomai - to reckon, count, compute, calculate, count over
Take into account, to make an account of, to impute
To reckon or account, to consider
Logizomai: v3, 5-counted; v6, 8-impute, v9 reckon, all the same word
Abraham was accounted righteous.
God placed Abraham in the account of the righteous
Righteousness was place on Abraham’s account
Circumcision was a sign of the righteousness that Abraham already had! V11
Understanding the grace of God will not make you sin more, it will make you sin less because you are sinless.
By grace through faith, both Abraham and David had NO chance on their own, but by faith it was counted to them as righteousness! Why does God use such messed up people? To show us that we have hope!
God is not keeping a record of our sin! He has cast our sin into the “sea of forgetfulness!” As far as the east is from the west!
Justified-- Just as if I’d never sinned.
Now this third class was Sharon Patrick, and if you remember, she isn't my favorite, she has things to say, but anyways... I did take pretty good notes this time, lots of scriptures, little commentary...if any?
Sharon Patrick- 3 B’s of the Bible Lesson 2
John 14:6 Jesus said to him, “I am the way, the Truth, and the Life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
John 10:9 “I am the door. If anyone enters by Me, he will be saved, and will go in and out and find pasture.”
Matthew 7:13Enter by the narrow gate; for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and there are many who go in by it.”
Psalm 40:9-10 :I have proclaimed the good news of righteousness In the great assembly; Indeed, I do not restrain my lips, O Lord, you yourself know. I have not hidden your righteousness within my heart; I have declared your faithfulness and your salvation; I have not concealed your lovingkindness and your truth from the great assembly.”
Romans 5:1 “Therefore having been justified by faith we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.”
Romans 10:9-10 “That if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.”
And that is it for today! "Come back next time for more of, READ IT YOURSELF!"
I was thinking of going to hike the incline again today, and it is saying there is going to be thunderstorms, so, no I'm not going, not going to climb that high haha, and I just don't feel up to it, haha that was punny...
anyways, come back tomorrow,
Ben Heath
