So the first class today had some things that I didn't agree with, had some that I did too, but like they told us at the beginning of the year, be like a cow, eat the grass and spit out the sticks, if something doesn't agree with the word of God, or if you just aren't ready to receive it, spit it out. So I did, and yeah, didn't get to many notes on it anyways!
So here are the second and third classes today, fyi, the worship this morning was awesome!
Lawson- Covenants-Romans Lesson 3?
If you don’t have a revelation of Righteousness then you don’t have a revelation of the Gospel, Romans (Gentile need for righteousness) 1:18-32, Everyone knows there is a God. (18-20) Even though everyone knows there is a God, they still want to do their own thing, they choose to not glorify God, it is their own choice. Professing themselves to be wise they became fools. Like the philosophy of Evolution, it is foolish, and only trying to find a way to not believe in God. Futility of their mind, after the tradition of men and not after Christ. And they changed the glory of the incorruptible God into a corruptible image. Like man and birds and four footed things. Now because of this God gave them up to their own lusts, it was their own choice and He let them chose it. The world apart from Christ is caught up in foolishness, idolatry, and lusts of the flesh, vile affections. Man left to himself is no good, and cannot get better on its own. They did not retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind to do those things that are not right. Fornication, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness, haters of God, etc.
(Jewish need for righteousness) Romans 2:1-29 Therefore you are inexcusable, O man, whoever you are who Judge, for in whatever you judge another you condemn yourself; for you who judge practice the same things. But we know that the judgment of God is according to truth against those who practice such things.” This is for the religious people, those that judge others, to quit being so critical, be legalistic and you will only be condemning yourself. If you offend the law at one point, you become guilty of it all. “And do you think this, O man, you who judge those practicing such things, and doing the same, that you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness, of God leads you to repentance?”!!! it is not legalism that leads you to repent! Its not me telling you how much you have done wrong or how much God hates you (because He doesn’t) It is the goodness of God! That leads you to repentance!
If men saw the truth of God and the truth of the devil, they wouldn’t serve the devil for a second!
A story, a man died and first went up to heaven and we met by St. Peter and took a tour of Heaven to see how he liked it, then he went to hell to see his friends and the devil gave him a tour of hell and there he saw a big drunken brawl and all his friends there, and he said, “oh well this looks like where I want to be!” and BAM! He was all alone and being burned up and not destroyed and being eaten by worms and crushed, and he screamed, “this isn’t what you showed me!” and the devil said back, “oh well that was just my advertising department!” He is the father of lies.
Sin will be judged and righteousness will be rewarded.
“Do you want to be the worst saint in heaven or the best sinner in hell?” you must be born again.
God is no respecter of persons! He doesn’t care what “race” you are, or how old or young you are, or how smart you are.
Legalism is self confident and foolish. (17-23) You make your boast in the law, but through breaking the law, you dishonor God.”
The problem with keeping the law (25) is that everyone breaks it!
Romans 3:1-20
What advantage do the Jews have? They have the Word. (1-2) Even if the church you grow up in is not perfect, even if they are totally legalistic, you still have the advantage of the word of God in your life! Its still better than being raised with no church. Who made your life the way it is? Take the blame, and you will have far more strength in you, stand up and take personal responsibility and you have finally come to a place that you can grow! As it is written, there is none righteous no not one, but this is talking about you before Christ, not you in Christ. For we know that whatever the law says it says to those who are under the law that before God all may become guilty. But we are not under the law anymore! But to those under the law it shows that they need a savior! The LAW WILL NOT SAVE YOU. It will show you sin, but it will not save you from it. Like if you look in a mirror and see you need to shave, it wont help to take the mirror down and try to shave with it!
Everybody needs righteousness, but we have righteousness, 3:21 “but now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the prophets, even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe, for there is no difference; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is Christ Jesus.”
You are either born again and are the righteousness of God, or you are a sinner and are on your way to hell. ONE OR THE OTHER NOT A LITTLE OF BOTH! Its not about YOUR performance! If you believe on Jesus then you pass the test! You cannot trust in yourself and your works! You must give up and believe that everything was taken care of by Jesus, you cannot do it yourself in any way. NOTHING BESIDES YOUR BELIEVING ON JESUS MATTERS BECAUSE IF IT DID THEN STILL NO ONE WOULD GO TO HEAVEN!
Yeah! and if any of you need a visual, Lawson looks just like Barny Fife. He gets riled up just like him, he sings just like him, and he looks just like him, so there you go! Explains the "yelling" ALLCAPS stuff as well.
Third Class,
Barry Bennett-Intro to the Bible
Progressive Revelation, Part 2, lesson 3
Matthew 5:21-22, 27-28, 31-32, 33-34, 38-39, 43-44
Jesus Established His word over the Law, He speaks of the law, do not murder and such, and he says “you have heard them say of old time…” this is Jesus, He is the Word who has always been, who is He speaking of? He is speaking of God, of Himself. Then He says, “But I say to you,” He is putting His word over the law, not voiding the law, not saying it is good to murder now, but He is dealing with the heart issue, “But I say to you, that whosoever is angry with his brother without a cause shall be in danger of the judgment…” The heart is more important than the action, the heart is the problem.
(27-28) The same, over adultery, there may have been some who didn’t kill their neighbor or slept with their neighbor’s wife, but they may have wanted to do both, and that is the problem it is about the heart, the nature of the problem. “But I say to you…” He is nailing them down with, you cannot be made righteous by the law, your hearts must be changed, you must be born again.
Over and over He puts His word over the word of the law.
Jump to Matthew 17, standing on the mountain with Moses and Elijah, the people of the law and of the prophets, but God says through the cloud, “This is my son, Hear HIM,” not hear the law.
John 14:7 “If you had known me, you should have known my father also, and from now on you know Him and have seen Him.” If you know Jesus you know the Father, the heart of Jesus is the heart of the Father. (9-10 of that chapter) Jesus says that He does nothing on His own but all He does is what He sees the Father do, the Father is not an angry God that wants to smite us, He healed the sick, raised the dead. We must get this revelation of who God is, Jesus isn’t the nice one and God the cranky one, they are one! “God moves in mysterious ways” Not anymore! That was to lost men who didn’t know God! We know God!
John 12:45 “He that sees me sees Him that sent me” Jesus says. Its not the physical what you see, its not the picture of Jesus painted on the wall, its what He does and His Heart, seeing Jesus with Spiritual eyes, to really see Jesus and therefore see God the Father! He really does love me, really cares for me, really died for and forgave me.
Colossians 1:15 “Who is the image of the invisible God the first born of every creature” =Jesus
Hebrews 1:3 “The brightness of His glory and the express image of His person” Jesus is the express image of His person, “and upholding all things by the word of His power, when He had by Himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high;” The Gospel is the power of God to set people free, make it simple, its not about making it hard to understand like so many people do.
All old testament revelation is partial, its still inspired, its just not the full revelation that we have in Jesus!
2 Corinthians 3:14 “But their minds were blinded for to this day a veil covers their eyes when the old testament is read” Its not about focusing on the old testament, what you focus on is where your life will go, if you focus on Jesus and the simplicity of it all then the veil is taken away and you get to see it all unfold.
Jesus is the maximum revelation of God to man. Galatians 1:12 “For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it, but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.” Paul got a full revelation of all this, it didn’t come through man to him, it came from God to him directly.
2 Peter 3:15 Peter, who walked on water, raised the dead, was a chief among the apostles, and he says that some of the revelation that Paul has is hard for Him to understand! The level of revelation is not the same in every book, this doesn’t mean we put one book over another, but understand that some have different understandings and angles on it all.
Job 1:21 “And said, Naked I came out of my mother’s womb, and naked shall I return, the Lord gave and the Lord has taken away, Blessed be the name of the Lord.” this is not something God said, it was Job’s perspective at that time! Don’t misunderstand this progressive revelation, God didn’t say that, it was job’s understanding at the time, Job says later, “Therefore I have uttered what I did not understand, things too wonderful for me, which I did not know.” He admits that He was wrong.
Ecclesiastes 3 19 “For what happens to the sons of men also happens to animals; one things befalls them: as one dies, so dies the other. Surely, they all have one breath; man has no advantage over animals, for all is vanity.” WOW! That was the wisest man ever to live on the earth in the natural man. BUT, this is what he found in his own wisdom, but it is not true, to say that man is no different from an animal!
2 Cor. 5:1-8 “For we know that if our earthly house, this tent, is destroyed, we have a building from God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens.” This is not saying what Ecclesiastes said… hmmm… it is because the old testament is not a full revelation of the Gospel! Old vs. New, the new wins!
1 Chronicles 21:1 “Now Satan stood up against Israel, and moved David to number Israel.” then go to
2nd Samuel 24:1 “Again the anger of the Lord was aroused against Israel, and He Moved David against them to say, “Go, number Israel and Judah.”” They had different revelations, one had a different understanding than the other.
Luke 24:44-47 “Then He said to them, “These are the words which I spoke to you while I was still with you, that all things must be fulfilled which were written in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the psalms concerning Me.” And He opened their understanding, that they might understand the scriptures.” God must open the eyes!
This teaching is awesome btw
First, General Revelation through creation, no one has an excuse, that which may be known of God is made manifest in them (creation) that they may know Him. Anyone who does not know God has had every chance to do so. But has either talked themselves out of it or has had people talk them out of it with smooth talk.
Acts 17:24-30 God made the world and everything, but does not dwell in temples made by hands, He gives life and breath to everything, that they should seek the Lord, For in Him we live and move and have our being!
Second, Specific Revelation- first the Word of God, the Bible
2 Timothy 3:15 “And that from a child you have known the holy scriptures, which are able to make you wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.”
James 1:21 “Lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, (abundance of wickedness) and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls.”
Luke 24:27 “And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, He expounded unto the in all the scriptures the things concerning Himself” Jesus showed them Himself from the old testament!
John 1:1 In the Beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the word was God. …14..And the Word was made flesh and dwelt among us, full of grace and truth.”
Jesus declared God the father to us!
The spirit
John 14:26
John 16:13-14
The Holy Spirit will teach us all things, and bring all things into our remembrance. The spirit of truth has come and will guide us into all truth, for He shall not speak of Himself; but whatsoever He shall hear, He shall speak. He shall glorify Me(Jesus) for He shall receive of mine, and shall show it to you.
